Issue 40 / January 2012
We're back!
Good things sometimes take a little while, and so it's been with the new-look website but I hope you'll agree it's been worth the wait. We've kept much - all the main magazine features, events, and, of course, the lonely hearts - and gained more. You'll now find more books and literary news, as well as this blog which I hope will become and remain a forum for intelligent comment and debate about all facets of literature and literary culture, and its relationship with life beyond.
The shiniest jewel in the Untitled crown is the new Arts Council-supported platform for fiction. Each month we will be publishing at least two short stories and a character study from literature's brightest and best. We're kicking off with Manlio Orobello's wonderful, meandering scenes from Sicily in From Round Here; a brilliantly observed, knife-sharp story from rising star Evie Wyld; and the first in our character studies series, Aaliya, by Rabih Alameddine.
Much is made of the American culture of short story writing, and the lamentable lack of support for such a culture in the UK. We hope Untitled can go some way towards redressing the balance by celebrating and promoting the art of short fiction, which is surely due a renaissance in this country.
We have an important literary culture which is constantly evolving and hugely exciting. But much of what is read now and how books are discovered is dictated by commerce, depriving many fine writers the attention they deserve. It's important that Untitled Books remains an independent champion of excellent writing, regardless of marketing budgets and industry-dictated trends.
As ever, we would love to hear what you think - email us at enquiries@untitledbooks.com
