Knights of the Round Table for the Knife Gang Generation Gets the Glyndebourne Treatment

Savvy producers often turn good books into films. Richard Yates's macabre novel Revolutionary Road won plaudits last year. The more light-hearted Where the Wild Things Are, Maurice Sendak's classic children's story, comes out on October 16th 2009. Young people are especially hardened media consumers so can an opera attract as much enthusiasm from the under 20s as a Hollywood movie?
The opera adaptation of Knight Crew by Nicky Singer (September 2009, CB editions) is attempting to do just that. Knight Crew is an update of the King Author myth and tells the story of a teenage knife gang who experience love, violence and revelation. An opera tailored for 14-19 year olds, Knight Crew will be performed by young people for young people. The fifth youth opera staged by Glyndebourne's main stage, called "the most imaginative opera-education department in the country" by The Independent, the opera is set to wow audiences in 2010. Auditions for the Youth Orchestra have already begun. Know a young person who'd like to get involved? Or just want to book your tickets now? Visit www.knightcrewopera.com.
