What I'm reading: Trouble Came to the Turnip, The Boat, and The Wolf
Ross Raisin
Author of God's Own Country.
Trouble Came to the Turnip by Caroline Bird
There should be more poets like this in the world. Funny, subversive, full of life. She should be poet laureate. She's only 21, but why not? Bird for laureate. Actually, it seems she's missed out since I wrote this, but I'm still going to thump that tub. Bird for laureate, next time.
The Boat by Nam Le
The stories are incredibly varied in theme, tone and place, but all of them are carefully and delicately constructed and manage a great power of feeling without ever shouting or using glishy sentences. Never a false note, that's the phrase.
The Wolf by Joseph Smith
This is a wonderful book, slow and poetic, perfect for Boxing Day. In a way, it shares with Nam Le's stories the same unflashy, slowly building power of good writing, although the style of this book is much more lyrical and dream-like.
